If users want access to data from outside the office, there are a number of options, depending on the situation. Also see Multiple Locations for information setting up multiple clinics.

Remote Desktop Software

GoToMyPC and LogMeIn both make outstanding products for remote connection. They allow users to log on to an office PC from other computers, and it feels as if the user were sitting at that computer, except for a slight time delay. The data is sent encrypted so it is secure. The only problem with this solution is that if the user uses a public computer, or if the computer gets a virus, someone may figure out what the user password is. If anyone figures out the user password, they would have access to the network. As long as users are careful, this should not be a problem.

LogMeIn Settings: If the 3D chart does not work, try changing the following settings:

1. After logging into LogMeIn prior to going full screen, there will be some boxes down the left side of the screen.
2. Click on Preferences, then click on Remote Control Settings, Under the General Settings Section, uncheck the box associated with Use Mirror Display Driver.
3. Apply the changes and try it again. If it still doesn't work, try unchecking Use Display Accelerator.

Windows also comes with a similar built-in remote desktop feature. Note that if a user utilizes one of these remote desktop solutions, the computer they are connected to is disabled during use by other users. In other words, it doesn't increase the number of users a computer can have.

Windows Remote Desktop

Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) was formerly known as Terminal Services. If the practice has a Windows Server, then users can use the built-in RDP to access the network remotely. The remote computers can run any application that they could normally run from the office. The advantage over GoToMyPC or LogMeIn, which are described above, is that there can be multiple connections operating at once. Instead of just connecting to a single computer, the server would handle all the connections. This solution works very well and is elegant in its simplicity.

If using RDP, change the following options:

• Preferences: Appointment module bubble popups, disable.
• Graphics Preferences: Use Simple Tooth Chart. This is not a requirement, but might help in some cases. Make sure that RemoteFX for the RDS service is activated so users can use OpenGL with Double Buffering. For instructions, see https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff817588(v=ws.10).aspx.

Both of these options reduce the graphic intensiveness of the application.

Mobile

See Royal dental Software Mobile for iOS or Android devices. As an alternative to the mobile version, users can use LogMeIn for iPhone or GoToMyPC for Microsoft Mobile devices.

Cloud

See Royal dental Software Cloud. Royal dental Software Cloud looks and feels just like the regular version of Royal dental Software, but can be accessed from a web browser.

Laptop or Removable Hard Drive

Users can back up data to a laptop and take it home with them. They will have access to all of the data as long as they remember to back up before leaving the office in the evening.

Another similar option is to use a hard drive of some sort to take home the data. This would primarily be an off-site backup strategy, but could allow users to use it at home.

Options include external drives, internal removable drives, external cases, full size, medium, and small drives, USB's, firewire, Ethernet, etc. The best option is probably a USB flash drive, which is very small and convenient. If the database a lot of images, then a small external hard drive that connects with USB2, firewire, or SATA may be needed. It will be fast, and it is easy to connect it to any computer.

With this solution it is important to note that data does not synch with the Royal dental Software database on the server, as the data on the laptop or hard drive is a backup. If any changes are made to the backup, follow the instructions on Backup Tool to restore data. This should only be done if no other changes have been made to the live database, otherwise, changes will be overwritten.
